K-chan and her deer Date: 04/02/07 Like in Nara, sika deer were all over the island. The deer are considered messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion and left to roam free around the island.
Food for me? Date: 04/02/07 The deer are very used to human presence as well as getting biscuts from them. This particular one kept following Kristen down the path to the shrine.

Reikado hall Date: 04/02/07 This building, across from Misen Hondo, holds an eternal flame that's said to have been burning for over 1200 years. I could only step through the door for a moment before being overcome by the smell of smoke.

The top of Mt. Misen Date: 04/02/07 Finally made it to the top of the mountain. The brochure says the time required to make it this far is about 26 minutes from the cable car station. I believe we took significantly more time than this.
Elevation of the summit Date: 04/02/07 529.8 meters is approximately 1,738 feet. Most of that wasn't hiked though as we took the cable car most of the way up.

Ohtorii gate sans water Date: 04/02/07 By the time we got back down from the mountain, the tide had gone out and people were walking right up to the gate. It a popular tradition to place coins in the wodden cracks of the legs of the gate and make a wish.

Kyoto tower lit up Date: 04/02/07 The tower is supposed to be in the shape of a candle stick, although it looks like a flying saucer impaled on a stick and left as a warning to others. It does however make for a good landmark.
